Over the years I have met several men who use anabolic steroids for increasing muscle mass. These men are often athletes competing at a very high level of competition or weight lifters, wrestlers or just general body builders. Many of the men have never considered the possibility that the use of these anabolic steroids can have an effect on sperm production.

In fact, the effect is dramatic. Men who use anabolic steroids in addition to other health issues that can occur have a significantly lower number of sperm. They don't produce sperm for the simple reason that testosterone, which is the main component of anabolic steroids suppresses the brain's stimulation of the testicle.

Giving high level of testosterone specifically suppresses two hormones in the brain. They are FSH and LH hormones, and these hormones are responsible for the production of sperm. Men who take testosterone will often have zero sperm in their ejaculate and can recover their sperm production by stopping the use of these anabolic steroids.

If you are a man who uses anabolic steroids and you are interested in the conception of a child, it is imperative that you discontinue the use of those steroids as soon as possible. You should see a urologist to help you do so and have a good evaluation of your semen.
