December’s icy Grand flows past the scenic 1934 Bridgeport (Bridge Street) bridge as seen on our nippy winter walk along Kitchener’s Lancaster Business Park trail, a 2 kilometre link on the 42 km Grand River Walter Bean Trail, 25 km of which are located in Kitchener. This path offers a short and scenic walk overlooking the Grand River in Bridgeport, in Kitchener’s northeast. One can access the trail from beside the Lancaster Smokehouse or the Economical Insurance Trailway parking lot at 126 Riverbend Drive. The Bridge Street bridge and river vistas are most visible in winter through the woods screening the steep embankment which forms the eastern edge of the Waterloo moraine, a result of deposition more than fourteen millennia ago during the Wisconsin glacial episode. Five such 20th century concrete bowstring arch bridges, located in East Garafraxa Township, Bridgeport, Freeport, Cambridge and Caledonia, are emblematic of the Grand valley.
Bridgeport was founded in 1834 at Shoemaker’s ford, a shallow water wagon route across of the Grand River near its confluence with Laurel (formerly Beaver) Creek. The village, which was incorporated 1907, was annexed from Waterloo Township by the City of Kitchener in 1973.
The Ontario / Dominion Sugar Company (1902-1923) pump house ruins, located near the riverbed Drive trailhead, are located at the river’s edge. Several piers from the People’s Railway Company (1909-1913) are remnants of an aborted 120 metre crossing downstream from Bridgeport.
