Missoula County officials unveiled a proposed budget for fiscal year 2026 that includes a roughly 7% property tax increase, with much of the additional revenue targeted at boosting compensation for law enforcement and other county employees. The increase marks a significant jump from last year’s 4.2% rise and would add approximately $36.50 to the annual tax bill of a home valued at $300,000 and $83.89 for a $600,000 home.

Chief Administrative Officer Chris Lounsbury explained during a county commissioners meeting on Thursday that the increase is needed to fund pay raises and address deferred maintenance throughout the county.

New property tax revenue would equate $5.7 million and would be added to the base budget, with $2.3 million dedicated to the county detention facility and its officers.
