The Portfolio of Villard de Honnecourt - Facsimile Editions and Medieval Illuminated Manuscripts

Описание к видео The Portfolio of Villard de Honnecourt - Facsimile Editions and Medieval Illuminated Manuscripts

The Portfolio of Villard de Honnecourt is a sketchbook completed in France between 1220 and 1240. It is the only known work by Villard de Honnecourt, an itinerant artist and architect considered by many to be the precursor of Leonardo da Vinci. Its 66 pages contain 250 drawings on parchment on geometry, zoology, architecture, engineering, and on the art of building cathedrals. Initially, the portfolio was entirely devoted to sketches, but then also became a manual with written descriptions on technical procedures, mechanical devices, and notes on the buildings the author had seen during his trips to Switzerland, France, and Hungary. The sketchbook, contained in a dark pigskin portfolio, is now stored in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
