The Ministry of Education is preparing to address the ongoing debate regarding the new UGC Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026 rules introduced on January 13, 2026.
These regulations, now mandatory for all colleges and universities, were designed to prevent caste-based discrimination in higher education institutions across the country.
According to sources, the government is working to ensure that all relevant facts about these rules are made available to the public.
At the centre of the controversy are concerns stemming from misinformation and misunderstandings among some sections of the public. Ministry sources have stated that these rules will not be misused under any circumstances and that misinformation is being spread about them.
