LAUSD Superintendent David Brewer, III spoke to graduate students in Professor Margaret Reed's Ed 524 Leadership: Challenges in Urban Education course on November 28, 2007 on the primary "leadership challenges in urban education" that he faces as the superintendent of the second largest urban school district in North America. Additionally, he addressed how he and his leadership team identified those challenges, what course of action has been mapped out, who has been identified to co-lead this work with him, and what outcomes are anticipated as a result of this work. Superintendent Brewer, a former Three-Star Vice Admiral in the US Navy, has been leading the school district since October 2006. Brewer was unanimously selected by the LAUSD Board of Education to become the 46th Superintendent. LAUSD is comprised of over 800 schools, 77,000 employees, and operates a $7.5 billion budget.
