You can use alternative colors, although the effect might not always be the same, due to the different hues, and consistencies of the paints. To substitute colors, you usually need to make blends of other colors.
When creating a pre-mix, use your discretion to add a little bit of pigment at a time, until you have the color mix you need. If you work wet-on-wet, your pigment ratios will be higher. With wet-on-dry, your mix should be more watery.
