22 Yards of Whiteness: "You Don't Have to Be Posh to Be Privileged"

When members of the Northampton public saw fit to vote me as their Male Role Model of the Year in November 2020, it got me to think about the institutions that helped facilitate that.

Having been a critic on my local establishment for years, I know I am also ‘acceptable’ because of how I carry myself, lots of those behaviours learned at private school. Would I have won that award had I not been privately educated? For most of my childhood, I attended schools where I was socialised to act in characteristically White middle-class ways, also even having to learn Received Pronunciation [RP]. Now, I understand my education privileged me over my state-educated peers, since school was also a guidebook to understanding White institutions.

In this lecture, I will plot my relationship with Global Colonial Whiteness in the context of my early induction to the private education sector, including the Whiteness of cricket and my name as a colonial attachment in the days of White masters and enslaved Black people.
