Hi, I’m Dr Namratha Puttur, Consultant Dermatologist at Clear Skin and Hair MD, Pune.
A few days ago, a young girl came to our clinic with her mother. She had just taken admission into engineering college. She was around 18 and her biggest concern was excessive facial hair, especially on the chin and around the upper lip. It was affecting her confidence. She had been shaving and waxing frequently, but the growth kept coming back too fast. I suggested laser hair removal as a solution.

How Laser Works?
Lasers are nothing but focused light energy. And each type of laser is designed to target something specific, what we call a “chromophore.” For hair removal, the target is melanin, which is the pigment that gives hair its color. For scars, we target the water in the skin. For pigmentation, again it’s melanin. For tattoos, it’s the ink particles.
Now let’s understand how deep lasers go. Your skin has three layers: the topmost layer is the epidermis, then comes the dermis, and below that is subcutaneous tissue. Dermatological lasers don’t go beyond the superficial dermis. That means they reach just 4 to 6 mm into the skin, less than 1 cm. They don’t touch your internal organs, your blood, or anything deeper. So there’s no question of lasers affecting your liver, hormones, or internal health.
Do Lasers Cause Cancer?
Absolutely not. This is a common myth. Lasers don’t change your DNA, they don’t affect your genes, and they don’t cause any kind of cancer. We use only medical-grade USFDA-approved lasers at our clinic. These machines have been thoroughly tested for safety.
What Side Effects Are Normal?
You may experience a mild burning sensation or some redness right after the session. That’s totally normal and goes away in a day or two. These effects are temporary and part of the healing response.
But what about those scary burn photos online? Yes, burns can happen, but mostly when the treatment is done by untrained technicians or at salons. They don’t understand skin types, don’t use the right machine settings, and often don’t follow the right hygiene protocols. That’s when damage happens.
Why Choosing the Right Clinic Matters
At Clear Skin and Hair MD, we examine every patient’s skin type before selecting the laser and its settings. For example, if you have dark skin, we use different energy levels compared to someone with very fair skin. Oily skin, sensitive skin, dry skin, all need different handling.
That’s why you should never get laser treatments from random salons or non-medical setups. Always go to a certified dermatology clinic.
Which Lasers Do We Use at Our Clinic?
For hair reduction, we use Diode lasers and Long-pulse Nd:YAG lasers. These are highly effective for Indian skin tones and give long-lasting results over multiple sessions.
For pigmentation issues like melasma or acne marks, we use Q-switched and Pico lasers. They work on deep pigment and give visible results with time.
