We often celebrate when we get our first paycheck or receive a job offer letter. As if the Corporate world is super shiny and we will always have a great time there. The reality is that the dark side of the corporate world exists and we only realize it after entering the corporate world and spending some time it it. Many people say I hate my corporate job, but very few actually think through the reasons behind it. My corporate journey has taught me many lessons about this dark side of corporate world and in this video, I share 6 facts from the dark side of corporate job that will help you navigate the corporate landscape much more carefully.

The first on the list is that nobody cares about you. When I was leaving my first job, I was anxious that the manager would create a ruckus and try to stop me from leaving or ask me to specify the reasons. On the contrary, when I told my manager that I wanted to leave he didn’t even ask me why. I had worked really hard for Accenture. My manager just told me, “Congratulations on your new job! When are you leaving?” That was all. At McKinsey as well, the HR said, “Congratulations. Best luck for your next venture!” It is even worse in terms of layoffs.

I was fired from 3-4 projects. The conversation went on like this, my manager called me to a room and said, “Pavan, thanks for all the effort. You don’t need to come to the office tomorrow.” There was nothing beyond that. But in the next 3-4 days everything was normal. That’s it. Nobody cares about you. You take the paycheck and you leave the company. The second fact from the dark side of corporate world is that there is a contradiction between job satisfaction and career growth. For corporations to grow, they need to ensure that employees perform the same thing again and again and become efficient in that. When you do the same thing many times, due to increased efficiency they can make you do it 100 times in much less time and that helps corporate charge more for your time.

Job satisfaction goes down when you are doing the same thing again and again. If you want to grow then you will need to give up on your job satisfaction. The next fact as a dark side of corporate job is that profits are always more important than people. Many multi-billion dollar companies have laid off thousands of employees over the past two years. And because of this employees are getting stressed that they will get fired if they make any mistake. But this has been the nature of the corporate world forever.

The next factor in the dark side of corporate job is the labour exploitation. Mr. Narayan Murthy proposed 70 hour work week but did not propose a similar pay for the 70 hour work. This is why the corporate leaders don’t care about your or any other employee’s work life balance.

The next point is about the micro-management done by your managers. The corporate world is all about solving one problem after another and moving forward. But sometimes you will get a manager who will look at every line of the code that you write. Because of this whatever little creativity is left in the job also goes for a toss. Employee morale will also go down. The next point is about income inequality, Wipro CFO Jatin Dalal recently moved from Wipro to Cognizant. His salary increased from 8 crores to 40 crores which is an 5 times jump.

The employee-to-CXO salary difference has often been 1:1000. We don’t even ned to talk about the whole country. The income inequality in one company is more than enough to show us the real picture. Hope you find this video valuable, see you in the next one.
