The Similan Islands archipelago is located one hundred kilometers northwest of Phuket Island, and 65 km of mainland coast, practically in front of Khao Lak, infamous during the December 2004 tsunami. The archipelago consists of a set of nine granite islands covered with lush tropical vegetation. They arise from the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, which is called the Andaman Sea. The show is fabulous and unforgettable. Small coral sand beaches to almost pure white, some bordering islands.
The coral sand is largely the product of nibbling marine wildlife. For example, parrot fish, which can be seen easily with a simple mask and snorkel, rejects an average of 16 pounds of coral sand per year. The conditions for coral growth are ideal here, with exceptionally clear water at a minimum temperature of 28 ° C. More than 200 species of hard corals have been identified in this region of Thailand.
The archipelago enjoys protected status of National Park since September 1982 prohibiting uncontrolled and unsightly buildings as is too often the case on the mainland and on the island of Phuket.
The archipelago is known divers from around the world to be one of the best "spot" in the world, with crystal-clear water. It is ranked among the 10 most beautiful sites in the world by the American magazine "Skin Diving".
The name comes from the Malay Similan "Sembilan" which means "new", many of the islands forming the archipelago.
The islands are identified by a Thai name or a number. Numbering starts from the south (No. 1 island) to the north (Island number 9).

Island Number 1: Koh Hu Yong. This is the island located at the southern end of the archipelago.
Island Number 2: Koh Pa Yang.
Island Number 3: Koh Pa Yan.
Island Number 4: Koh Miang - the second largest island of the archipelago area, after Koh Similan is on this island that is the Office of the National Park and it is also the only one that has bungalows. It is also possible to rent tents. See below, section Accommodation.
