STORYLINE:
Calm returned to the streets of the Lebanese capital Beirut on Monday as intensive diplomatic efforts continued to prevent a further deterioration in the political standoff between Prime Minister Fuad Saniora's government and opposition forces led by Hezbollah.
Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa met on Monday with the Lebanese president Emile Lahoud following a series of meetings on Sunday with leaders of the feuding sides, including Saniora and Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri and personal representatives of Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah.
Speaking to reporters after meeting with Lahoud, Amr Moussa said that he was worried about the current situation in Lebanon.
"I am sure that the Lebanese people with their industrious richness can always surmount any of those obstacles, provided that we all help them and they decide to help themselves. That Lebanon should not be divided and should not be allowed to let itself pray to the forces of - what can I say - negative forces," he said.
On Monday the aftermath of damage caused by violent clashes between Shiite and Sunni Muslims in Beirut on Sunday night was clear to see.
The clash broke out on Sunday evening between a group of Shiite Muslim youths and some Sunnis in a predominantly Sunni neighbourhood in West Beirut, leaving one man dead from gunshot wounds and 21others injured.
Security officials said a group of about 100 Shiites broke into a Sunni cemetery and smashed the windows of some shops and cars.
A fist fight and stone-throwing broke out between the Shiite youths and residents of the neighbourhood, then shots were fired, killing a 20-year-old Shiite man.
Army troops fired smoke bombs to disperse the crowd, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"We are calling for the right to have a new government,'' he added.
