The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is expected to approve a proposal for Maha Metro to execute the extension of the PMRDA Metro Line 3 from Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor, according to senior officials from the state’s urban development department. Both the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) had submitted development plans for the same. Following a directive from the state government, Maha Metro's proposal was forwarded to the Centre for approval. Once cleared, Maha Metro will oversee this 31-km route extension alongside other Metro projects in Pune. The project cost will be jointly funded by the state and Central governments, with tender processes expected to begin soon after approval.

Currently, PMRDA, in partnership with the Tata Group under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, is working on the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro Line 3, slated for completion by the end of 2025. To streamline efforts, the Pune Urban Metropolitan Transport Authority (PUMTA) decided to consolidate parallel proposals for Metro extensions under Maha Metro during a meeting chaired by the Pune divisional commissioner. The state government had earlier directed Maha Metro to handle extensions from Swargate to Loni Kalbhor and Saswad. These developments are expected to significantly improve Pune's public transportation infrastructure, connecting key areas like Hadapsar and Pulgate.
