Hijabs and Heavy Music? Young, female, Indonesian Trio Voice of Baceprot ask for a blessing on "God, allow me (please) to play music."

Firda Marsya Kurnia (vocals, guitar), Widi Rahmawati (bass), and Euis Siti Aisyah (drums) - the members of Voice of Baceprot - have suffered quite a bit of intolerance - even within their own Muslim community in West Java, Indonesia. Wave after wave of backlash and stigmatization came at them from all directions and nearly exhausted them out of the music scene in 2016. The band fought back and the result is their heavy yet melodic and catchy new single.

I sat down with the ladies to discuss the new music, their religion, their plans for their show at Wacken 2022, and much more!

SLIPKNOT - BEFORE I FORGET (Cover)
When we first knew about Slipknot, we were instantly drawn and intrigued by their masks. At the time, we were wondering how someone could continue to make music to the point of being so popular yet still consistently hide their faces while others use theirs as a commodity. In the end, we decided to cover some of the songs that they tend to play at their shows.
We then realised that they instead focussed on their musical capabilities. Their heavy, thumping, yet easy-listening music is probably just one of the many reasons why they are so beloved by many metalheads across the globe. They have inspired us to dream that if we could one day be as big as them, we want to keep pushing forward by placing musicality above all else. Without having to flog our appearance but also not abandoning our identity.

“For us, this is one very powerful song. We have always enjoyed the feeling of flying amidst a rebellious sensation, which Tom Morello and his bandmates do when they perform this track.
There’s a hint of choreographed dance and a lot of spontaneous movements. A little bit of fear and anxiety mixed with overpowering spirit. And suddenly, everything feels amazing. We feel it too, that independence in reality also applies to women like us.
