Palau Navigates US-China Rivalry As One Of Taiwan's Remaining Diplomatic Allies | CNA Correspondent

One of Taiwan's 12 remaining diplomatic allies, Palau is a tiny nation with a population of fewer than 20,000 people. That makes the country in the western Pacific Ocean even smaller than an average borough in Taiwan. Palau was a US-administered territory after World War II until 1986, when it entered into the Compacts of Free Association (COFA) agreement with the US, joining the Marshall Islands and Micronesia.

During CNA correspondent Victoria Jen’s visit to Palau, she witnessed the efforts and resources that have been poured in by Taiwan to keep the island country on its side. This amid mainland China's expanding reach in the region. To better understand Palau’s place in the growing rivalry between the United States and China due to its relations with Taiwan, she sat down with Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr in an exclusive interview. She also examined the impact of increasingly volatile geopolitical undercurrents on the diving paradise’s tourism industry.
