Vardousia (or Korakas) is a mountain range that includes the southernmost tip of Pindos in Central Greece.Nestled between other mountain ranges,Gkiona,Oiti and the mountains of Nafpaktia,Vardousia is one of the most sparsely populated, isolated areas and is particularly popular with mountaineers and climbers.
It rises in the northwest of Fokida, with a small part of the mountain extending into Fthiotida. It is the second highest mountain in Roumeli after Gkiona, with a height reaching 2,495 meters (Korakas peak). They are among the most beautiful mountains in Greece. They have a magnificent scenery that has nothing to envy from the Alps.High and sharp peaks, vast meadows and abundant waters are the landscape that composes Vardousia. The name Vardousia is said to have replaced the older name of the mountain, which was called Anemisto. It is an alpine mountain in miniature, with many fascinating contrasts, intense relief and imposing peaks, which offers the E4 trail one of its most beautiful routes.
The ancient Greek name for Vardousia is Korax,a name that survives to this day among the local population who use it for the highest peak.Strabon called it the maximum mountain because of its height.
During the years of the Revolution of 1821,the rebel residents of the surrounding villages operated and took refuge in the so-called blockades in Vardousia.
