Randoseru - Japanese schoolbag | ランドセル

Описание к видео Randoseru - Japanese schoolbag | ランドセル

The backpack you see is called Randoseru (ランドセル) and it is by far the most popular schoolbag used by primary school students across Japan.

The name randoseru derives from the Dutch word for backpack "ransel" and, although it was first introduced in Japan in the late 19th century, it became popular among students only in the 1960s.

At first the colors used were mainly two: red for woman and black for man.
However, more colors and patterns have been made available in recent years.

Randoseru can be made of leather (real or synthetic) and can be very expensive.
With a price range usually on the high side some branded randoseru with premium materials can cost over 100.000 yen ($950 - €850).
At supermarkets and chain stores you can definitely find better deals but in general you can expect to spend between 50.000 and 70.000 yen.

The high cost is somehow justified by the fact that these bags are practically military grade and can be used throughout the full primary school period (that in Japan is 6 years).

For this reason, the choice of Randoseru represents a milestone in the life of many primary students in Japan and often involves the whole family.
