Retired government official freedom fighter Nurul Islam has succeeded in cultivating oyster pearls in Barguna. His success story has spread throughout the district. Seeing this success, many people in the area are now becoming interested in pearl cultivation. It has been found out that Barguna Sadar Upazila K. Retired government official Nurul Islam set up an agricultural farm called Bright Agro in Latabaria village. His younger brother Kamrul Islam, Deputy Project Director of the Sustainable Coastal Marine Fisheries Project, provided advice and overall support. In 2019, Nurul Islam took up the project of cultivating pearls of oysters as well as fish in this agro farm. He also built an exhibition farm. Pearls are used in jewelry, pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics, paints formulations. Although pearls are found naturally in Haor and Beel in our country, they have to be imported from abroad. Abdus Sobahan, who is interested in pearl farming, said, "We have a lot of natural reservoirs.So that oysters are available. We saw Nurul Islam Bhai's exhibition farm. We ourselves are interested in cultivating pearls. However, with government support, it is possible to cultivate commercially. Nurul Islam told Bangladesh Pratidin that any family can benefit financially by cultivating pearls and fish at the same time in ponds or water bodies. He said people from different areas are coming every day to see Bright Agro's pearl farming project. Bright Agro is giving ideas to the interested people about the method, technique and care of oyster pearl cultivation by hand. He added that 8 pearls are produced from each oyster. At present more than 3 thousand pearls are being produced. Meanwhile, Bengalis living in Greece are communicating about collecting pearls. An initiative has been taken to send 1,000 pieces of pearls to Greece next November as per the demand of the expatriate Bengalis.6 pearls are produced from each oyster.
