We’ve been slowly building up Blue’s Recall the past couple of days. We have since moved past what Phase 1 and 2 and are now working on the Follow!

I like to use the “COME” command in two different ways: one involves putting your dog in a command, like a Down or Sit, walking away, and then recalling him to your feet.

The other involves movement from one area to another, as your dog “follows” you around the house using the “come” command.

Creating a pattern of choices and commands for Blue will shape a calmer and more reliable dog while indoors. The goal is to repattern his choices so heavily, that they then become second nature, where micromanagement is no longer necessary.

The lesson learned in Phase 3 of Recall is in a dog’s ability to listen intently, and WAIT for the next command given, rather than anticipating and offering behaviors before they are asked. Creating a pattern is perfect in the beginning stages of this process so that maneuvering around the room becomes predictable. But once that pattern is set, and the dog easily becomes accustomed to it, it’s important to change it up to test whether or not they’re just running through the motions, versus really listening!

All of these small steps will eventually lead to bomb-proof Impulse Control and 100% off-leash reliability! And for this easily distracted and slightly insecure boy, a solid Recall is a must!
