A Hope for Santals - Official Video

The Santal community is recognized as the largest homogeneous tribal group in India. We take immense pride in our people, our rich cultural heritage, and our significant contributions to the world.

While the origins of our homeland are debated, one thing is clear: wherever we have settled, we have transformed the land to make it livable. Our ancestors cleared dense jungles to create fertile land for agriculture and bravely faced wild animals to protect and provide for our communities.

However, the most tragic aspect of our history is the loss of our lands. Throughout history and even today, many Santals lose their land due to poverty or are forcibly displaced.

Historically, there was a time when the 'Mahajan' seized Santal lands, turning Santals into servants on their own soil. During this period, four brothers—Sido, Kanhu, Chand, and Bhairav—along with their sisters, Phulo and Jhano, led a rebellion known as the 'Santal Hul' to liberate their people from this oppression.

In contemporary times, while such overt oppression may not be as visible, our community faces new challenges. Issues like poverty, alcoholism, and superstition compel many to sell their land at undervalued prices.

Today, we need a new kind of Hul, not against a physical oppressor but against the internal struggles and spiritual enemies that threaten to enslave our people.
