Dr. Shirley Weber is a native of Hope, Arkansas, and an academic and politician nominated to serve as the 31st California Secretary of State by Governor Gavin Newsom on December 22, 2020, and sworn into office on January 29, 2021. She is California’s first Black Secretary of State and only the fifth African American to serve as a state constitutional officer in California’s 170-year history. Secretary Weber was previously a member of the California State Assembly for the 79th Assembly District, which includes portions of San Diego county. As a California Legislative Black Caucus member, she was the first African American to be elected to the California State Legislature south of Los Angeles.

While Secretary Weber was an Assembly member, she authored AB 3121, a historical bill approved by Governor Gavin Newsom in May of 2020, and established a nine-member task force to inform Californians about slavery and explore ways the state might provide reparations for slavery to African Americans. Secretary Weber is a powerful voice for justice who has dedicated her career to defending and strengthening our most fundamental civil rights, including the right to vote. In a time of unprecedented partisan attacks on our democracy, Secretary Weber stands firm, straight, and strong to protect, secure, and expand Californians’ right to vote.
