Best of Ramkumar Chatterjee is a select collection of Bengali Puratani Songs or Bengali Baithaki Songs or Bengali Tappa Songs. Ramkumar Chatterjee has been a key ingredient for the popularity of Bengali Tappa. Bengali Tappa as a significant genre in Bengali musical styles. Ramkumar Chatterjee is one of the greatest exponents of Bengali Tappa, Puratoni Bangla Gaan and Bangla Baithaki Gaan. He was very popular among the masses because of his unique signature parodies, which fascinated the audiences. He also composed music for two Bengali films, Streer Patra (1973) and Parikrama (1996).
Ramkumar Chatterjee was born in 1921 in Darjipara area of north Kolkata. He belonged from a strong musical background, as his grandfather himself was a classical singer. He wanted young Ramkumar Chatterjee to learn tabla as it would help him to develop an ear for musical notation. Later Ramkumar learned Bengali ‘Tappa’ from Jitendranath Bandopadhay popularly called ‘Kolobabu’. During his early singing career, Sharatchandra Pandit popularly known as ‘Dadathakur’ appointed him as a singer at the radio station after a short voice test which he cleared and started singing. He was given five rupees per song. The album “Best of Ramkumar Chatterjee” is a compilation of some of the very popular Bengali Puratani Songs or Bengali Baithaki Songs like “Kader Kuler Bou”, “Let Me Go Ohey Dwari” and “Ekoda Ek Bagher” etc. This is surely a gold mine of Old classics which are evergreen.
