The atmospheric circulation in each hemisphere is composed of three cells. There are three different kinds of cells: Hadley, Polar, and Ferrel. Every year, each circulation cell completes one full orbit around the planet.

1. The cell of Hadley
A large-scale atmospheric circulation known as the Hadley cell occurs when air rises close to the equator, moves high and poleward, lowers in the subtropics, and then moves close to the surface equatorward.


2. The ferrel cell
A mid-latitude atmospheric circulation known as the Ferrel cell occurs when air rises in the subtropics, flows at a high altitude poleward, and then drops in the mid-latitudes.

3. The Polar Cell
a low-latitude atmospheric circulation in which high-altitude air rising close to the poles flows poleward.
