In the early 1950s, the United States became the primary financier of France’s war against the Viet Minh in Indochina.
Under President Eisenhower, with strong backing from Richard Nixon, Washington covered almost 80 percent of the war’s cost.

That support totaled roughly $2–3 billion at the time, equivalent to about $25–30 billion today.
American funds, aircraft, weapons, and supplies flowed to French forces.

Despite this massive backing, France suffered a decisive defeat in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu.
The loss ended French colonial rule in Indochina and revealed a hard truth: money and firepower could not compensate for strategic failure on the ground.

Ironically, France’s defeat marked the moment the United States began stepping into the conflict it had just funded—and lost by proxy.
