House Democrats are slamming President Donald Trump's proposed FY 2019 Budget, as well as his infrastructure proposal, with one Democrat saying "the American people got a pretty nasty valentine."
The president's $4.4 trillion budget proposal would give a big boost to military spending, but cut social safety net programs, while putting the government on track to run trillion-dollar deficits for the next few years.
"It makes massive cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps and other crucial social programs, while providing funding for a useless wall, which is just another example of the president's misplaced priorities," said Rep. Linda Sanchez, the vice chair of the Democratic Caucus.
"This budget fails to meet the needs of the middle class, of working families, of children. It really is demonstrable of the crumbling leadership of this administration," said Rep. Joe Crowley, the chairman of the caucus.
Sanchez also hit the Trump administration for the $1.5 trillion infrastructure plan that calls for
$200 billion in federal spending, but requires vast amounts of funding from cities and states.
"There is strong bipartisan support to rebuild our nation's roads and bridges, but the proposal the president has put forth fails to provide any substantial funds necessary to actually pay for building projects," she said.
And she criticized House Speaker Paul Ryan for what she described as an effort to block a bipartisan bill in the House that would protect so-called Dreamers, immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, and who could face deportation unless legislation is passed to protect them.
"I've said it before that Paul Ryan is a sole impediment to us passing a bipartisan bill that would give the relief that Dreamers need and deserve," Sanchez said.
"All we are asking for is a for a vote," she said.
