Rainlilies (Zephyranthes spp.), also known as fairy lilies or zephyr flowers, are delightful, low-maintenance perennial bulbs cherished for their surprising bursts of bloom. Their common name stems from their remarkable habit of flowering suddenly, often within a few days, following significant rainfall in the late summer or early fall.
​🌼 Flower Description
​These charming flowers grow from small, easy-to-manage bulbs and feature grassy, strap-like foliage that remains relatively short, typically between 6 to 12 inches tall. The flowers are erect and funnel-shaped, often resembling a crocus, and can reach up to 4 inches across. While the classic Zephyranthes candida (White Rain Lily) is pure white and lightly fragrant, cultivars are available in a variety of vibrant colors, including pink, yellow, and orange. The blooms are typically ephemeral, lasting only a day or two, but new flowers appear in quick succession, especially during humid or rainy weather. Rainlilies thrive best in full sun and well-draining soil.

​Rainlilies are most commonly propagated through bulb division, which is an excellent way to thin out crowded clumps and create new plants.
​Timing: The best time to divide the bulbs is during their dormancy period in the late fall or winter.
​Digging: Gently dig up the established clump of bulbs, being careful not to damage the roots.
​Separation: Carefully separate the offsets (smaller bulbs) from the main, or host, bulb.
​Replanting: Replant the individual bulbs or offsets immediately in their new location, covering the tops of the bulbs with about an inch of soil. When planting in the ground, space them 2 to 4 inches apart, though they prefer being more crowded in containers.
​Propagation from seed is also possible but is a slower process, with seeds sometimes requiring an initial soak to speed up germination. Rainlilies are an easy-to-grow, naturalizing plant that will reliably spread and return year after year.
