I know it sounds weird, and harsh even, but if you left your country, why are you settling with a community of your people? Being married to a person of the same nationality is the case for many expatriates, and I've tried to be English-only at home, but that is not possible.

Therefore you must be immersed and involved with people who won't speak your mother tongue. That's how you will burn the bridge and learn. Especially if you look for the Italians, French, Spanish or any other nationality that speak well English but they won't sound impossible for you at the beginning like the Irish, English or the Scottish.

When I took this job in Belgium, I had everything I needed to learn: non-natives that spoke English really well and really slow. I remember that I used to call them up after work for a glass of the excellent Belgian beer so that I could use my spare time learning.
