“Years Ago” is a song I wrote that was inspired by a true story I stumbled upon in the newspaper one morning: it was about a man celebrating his 92nd birthday singing Karaoke at a bar, which sparked a lot of thoughts, curiosities ... and eventually this song. This is a “story-song” through-and-through, rather than divulging any more, I’ll let you take-in the story through the lyric & melody, as was intended. LYRICS:
I read in the newspaper a story about a man 
92-years old holding a microphone in his hand 
Growing-up he said he’d be a singer some day 
At that karaoke bar, that’s what he was yesterday 

He sang a song he used to sing as a child 
Everyone sang along like it had come back in style 
When he was done he grinned and said, “man that was fun
I just wish I had this chance when I was still young 

I should’ve done this years ago when I had a better voice 
It was my dream but no one gave me the choice  
But if you really want something, don’t sit back and wait 
Cause you’ll end up old like me and find yourself saying 
I should’ve done this years ago” 

I went down to that karaoke bar the next Friday night
There he was on stage again, I couldn’t believe my eyes 
While everyone was singing along, I just sat there and stared 
He saw me all alone, so he sat with me and said 
 
 “That was a song from back in nineteen-sixty-four 
Way before your time but you’ve heard of Johnny Cash before” 
I said, “I just like watching you it looks like you’re having fun” 
Then he looked me in the eye and said “let me tell you this my son 

I should’ve done this years ago when I had a better voice 
It was my dream but no one gave me the choice  
But if you really want something, don’t sit back and wait 
Cause you’ll end up old like me and find yourself saying 
I should’ve done this years ago” 

Oh, the next week he caught me, I was singing along 
And he said “hey kid, come-here, help me do this next song” 
 
We sang a song he used to sing back in the war 
And I saw a teardrop from his eyes splash against the floor 
He said “don’t let life pass you by, go chase your dreams today,  
And you won’t have to sit here one day and say 

I should’ve done this years ago when I had a better voice 
It was my dream but no one gave me the choice 
Son, I know you want this, so don’t you hesitate 
And when you’re old like me you’ll look back and say: 
I’m glad I did this years ago”
