Описание к видео He Shot Down A Japanese Zero With A Pistol — While Parachuting

Why did a Japanese fighter pilot fly dangerously close to an American hanging helplessly in his parachute? And why did that pilot open his canopy, sealing his own fate? This is the true story of Second Lieutenant Owen J. Baggett, whose four desperate shots from a Colt M1911 pistol created one of World War II's most incredible legends — a story even his own superiors refused to believe for decades.

March 31, 1943, Burma. Second Lieutenant Owen Baggett's B-24 Liberator is torn apart by Japanese Ki-43 "Oscar" fighters. With his bomber on fire, Baggett and his crew bail out over enemy territory. What follows is a war crime: the Oscars begin mercilessly strafing the defenseless parachutists. Playing dead, Baggett watches as one curious enemy pilot slows his fighter to a stall just twenty feet away and opens the canopy for a closer look. In that split second, Baggett makes a decision that defies all odds. He draws his service pistol. Four shots ring out. One Japanese fighter spirals out of control into the jungle. This impossible act of aerial combat was just the beginning of a 30-month ordeal in brutal Japanese prison camps, where his own story would come back to haunt him in the most unexpected way.

For over 50 years, his account was dismissed as an unverifiable war story. But historians kept digging. What did declassified Japanese records reveal? How did the testimony of another captured American colonel finally provide the missing piece of evidence? This video pieces together the full story of the only confirmed incident in military history where a pilot shot down an enemy aircraft with a handgun while parachuting.
