This is sad news! Apparently both eggs were non-viable. It's hard to tell without having a real close examination of the eggs afterwards. It doesn't appear that they were ever fertilized. This is a common occurrence as disappointing as it is when it happens.
Last night when Missy got off the egg it seemed that it was partially buried in the nest grasses as it had already begun to disentegrate. Missy eventually consumes the shell. This will benefit her body with calcium and also clean up the nest. My footage of the shift change this morning was lost as it did not save properly and was also no longer available on the DVR for me to recapture with the recording software.
Around 7 am, to the best of my recollection, Missy began to call Pa. He did not respond right away, so she paged again. She left the nest and Pa did arrive to the nest and settled into the egg cup. He looked somewhat bewildered as to where the egg that he wanted to roll had disappeared. But he went ahead and dug his feet into the egg cup as he has done everyday since the two eggs were laid. However, he did not stay long. After he left, Missy returned to the egg cup to continue the incubation duties she is so attuned to now.
If you would like more information on egg hatching and incubation and when it fails, may I refer you to a website that has everything you could ever want or need to know about bald eagles in my opinion. GO to elfruler.com, a website that is devoted to the bald eagle created by a retired professor who has been gathering data since 2009 from online nests cams. There is egg laying and hatching data from many of the online nests including the Berry nest, such as when the eggs were laid, when they hatched, and what the results were of every clutch of eggs, etc.
Re-clutching is a possibility. We will wait and see what the eagles do. I am thankful that the eggs broke now since they were not going to produce a hatchling, because otherwise, as we have already seen Pa Berry do in years gone by, they would have continued to incubate these eggs for a period of days, or weeks, lessening the likelihood of a re-clutch to happen. So, this is the best thing to have happened under these sad circumstances when there is not a chick to hatch. So, we wait. It is always interesting to see what the eagles do. Thanks for Watching!
