Johnston Canyon is the most popular hike in all of Banff. It’s also accessible year-round as it’s possible to trek in the winter to see the frozen waterfalls at the end.


The Canyon is Vehicle accessible, but parking can be limited during peak times. Public transit is available from the town of Banff, but must be reserved in advance.

The hike through the Canyon is a gorgeous walk through a narrow canyon with intimate views of Johnston Creek before it converges with the Bow River.

The lower falls is about an hours hike, and the upper falls gets a bit more steep, and is about 2 hours hike with an elevation of 859 ft and an entirety of 3.2 miles.

If you are interested in the Ink Pots, which we did not do, it is about a 4 hour round trip hike.
