Marc Thomas, Savannah, GA:
I use a CPAP. I need that to sleep safely otherwise I could be easily subject to a heart attack. We'd been looking at solar power but had found that the installation costs were expensive. Georgia BRIGHT with the Capital Good Fund was a much more manageable deal.
Alicia Brown, Georgia BRIGHT Director:
Georgia BRIGHT is a solar and battery storage leasing program that's geared towards low- and middle-income households earning under $150,000 a year.
Thomas:
Georgia BRIGHT had a battery system so that we could have power continuity. Since we've had the battery system in place, we've had four outages, and we never even noticed them until we realized our neighbors didn't have power.
Brown:
When we install the system, we take the tax credit and use it to reduce the lease payment that the household pays. We also monetize the renewable energy credits, which have a value to companies with clean energy goals. We could not have done this without our corporate and philanthropic partners like Wells Fargo. We serve just over 50 households so far as well as some nonprofits through our Georgia BRIGHT for Nonprofits program.
Father Charles Todd, Trinity Episcopal, Statesboro, GA:
We were able to get a solar array large enough to meet the needs of the parish. It did not cost us anything up front. Over the course of the 25-year lease, it will save us about $62,000.
Thomas:
We haven't made a maintenance call. People are actively managing the system and its connectivity.
Todd:
By installing those solar panels, that allows us to free up funds that can be used to reinvest in the community.
Brown:
We'll be looking for organizations that are willing to work with us to massively scale up the number of households we serve from 150 for the pilot to a target of 16,000 for Solar for All through the end 2029.
Thomas:
I have a tracking panel on my computer. So, I can actually watch our consumption. We're saving money so any power we don't use goes back out on the grid. We do care about the climate impact. Everybody's got their little bit of responsibility.
