Rosaline Murugi Wawira was born in Kirinyaga County but raised in Embu, where hardship marked her early years. Her father’s affection was uneven—he favored some children while rejecting others. This emotional neglect fractured the family, and her mother, unable to endure the mistreatment, eventually left the marriage.

The employer’s relatives came, seized all his belongings, and shut down the business. Her mother lost her job and told the children they would return to the village. She lied, saying she was going to collect money owed to her—but instead, she disappeared again, only returning when she was nearly due to give birth.

Back in the village, her brother rejected them, forcing her mother to rent a small house for herself and the children. Life was unbearably hard. Rosaline had to drop out of school due to the financial strain and began searching for work. She found a job as a househelp in Nairobi, but after a month, the man of the house tried to take advantage of her. One morning, she fled.

Unaware of the distance between Nairobi and Embu, Rosaline began walking home. She met a man along the way and asked for directions. He told her Embu was far.

Later, a friend took her to a club. While she was drinking soda, a man approached and bought her a guarana. He took her to his house and slept with her. Eventually, Rosaline realized she was pregnant—but she didn’t know who the baby daddy was,she only saw him one night.

She found another job as a househelp. One day, the man of the house began flirting with her. He undressed and forced himself on her, warning her to stay silent. She later gave birth and raised the child.

Some time later, she was told about a job opportunity in Saudi Arabia. The agent demanded money, and her mother took out a loan to help. Sadly, the agent turned out to be a fraud and disappeared with their money. Rosaline returned to the village once again.

Eventually, she moved back to Nairobi and began working as a mama fua—doing laundry to survive. But with children to feed and no stable income, she was drawn into transactional sex. It wasn’t a choice made lightly, but one born of desperation.
