"Matti" is a name of a village near Udupi and "Gulla" means round in Tulu. This vegetable has obtained geographical indication tag in 2011 for its unique taste and flavour.

History of mattu gulla
Mattu gulla, popularly known as Udupi mattu gulla is known to be grown in a village named Matti/ Mattu. Matti is a land of a great saint Sri Vadiraja Tirtha Swamiji of Sode Vadiraja Matha, Udupi. It is said that Swamiji had a practice of offering a sweet dish called hoorana to lord Krishna and Hayagreeva (white horse) daily. Because of his pure devotion and love towards Hayagreeva, a horse would manifest from the idol and eat the prasadam. This activity used to take place behind the closed doors of the temple sanctum, wherein swamiji would come out with an empty vessel. This made the other people in the mutt very curious as well as jealous. They thought that it was Swamiji who used to empty the prasadam vessel. So once, they mixed poison in the prasadam without Swamiji's notice, and as usual when swamiji offered it to the lord, the manifested horse ate up all the prasadam and now the hayagreeva idol started turning blue. On seeing this, the people who plotted this act felt ashamed of themselves. Swamiji used his spiritual powers and gave a fistful of seeds to the local farmers to sow.
This brinjal was then offered to Hayagreeva as naivedya, then the blue tinge of the idol started vanishing.
This brinjal seeds were given by Swamiji, since then it is considered sacred and it is used in making sambar and served during the Udupi paryaya, a biennial festival held at the temple town of Udupi. This gulla is known for its property to remove nanju (toxin), so it basically acts like an antidote.
