It's been almost 30 years since Pam Purney saw her best friend, Janean Brown, just a few hours later the 19-year-old's body would be found in a drainage ditch along Archbold Whitehouse Road in Whitehouse.

"She's been gone for 30 years but I never forgot her," Purney recalls of Brown who was living with her at the time of her murder.

Police hadn't forgotten about the case either and in 2011 the case was re-opened.

On Thursday, a man Purney says was a suspect since day one was arrested for Brown's murder in November 1983.

56-year-old Andrew Gustafson was arrested in Michigan on Thursday, booked into in the Saginaw County Jail, and charged with two counts of aggravated murder and one count of murder.

Purney says the arrest wouldn't have happened without the determined investigators that have been on the case.

"They waited this long because they had one shot, they had one shot to get it right and they finally did," Purney told WNWO.

Purney adds that while she knows a trial still lies ahead, the news of Thursday's arrest does bring her some comfort.

"I don't want to say tears of joy...but relief, tears of relief," Purney said.

In the coming days Gustafson will be extradited to Toledo to stand trial.
