US President Donald Trump has claimed he stopped a war between India and Pakistan, stating the two nuclear powers "were ready to go at it". According to Trump, his intervention, which he said was based on tariffs and trade, was "very effective" and brought the conflict to a halt. In separate remarks, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar championed India's foreign policy, stating its strategic autonomy is stronger than ever. Jaishankar said, "India did not ally with anybody even when we were much weaker. Today, there is absolutely no reason to do it. In fact, the behavior of some countries has made the case for strategic autonomy stronger." He argued that current global trends and the behaviour of some states reinforce the need for India to maintain its freedom of choice and pursue multi-alignment rather than allying with any single power.
