Topical plays or message plays are pieces that try to send a message for their audiences. Although many of these plays probably mean well, they can be easily seen as pedantic, telling the audience what to think and why. This can be due to the fact that sometimes the focus is only on the message that the playwright is trying to push, leaving no space for any real character development. An example of this is allowing a big plot event to happen to prove your point, instead of reaching your point by allowing your characters to speak and breathe. So the best message plays are the ones that allow round characters to raise important questions without providing an easy answer. David Valdes is an award-winning playwright whose work has been performed across the US and abroad. He has worked with Actor’s Theater of Charlotte, Milagro, Borderline, Mixed Blood, Boulder Ensemble Studio Theater, The Humana Festival, New York International Fringe Festival, Portland Stage, Stage Left, Fresh Ink, the Boston Center for the Arts, Company One, and others. His plays have twice been featured in the National Showcase of New Plays, and he has received fellowships from Company One, IATI, and the Boston Foundation. As a columnist, he has written for the New York Times, Boston Globe, Huffington Post, and Medium.
