A whirlpool of frigid, dense air known as a polar vortex is stretching across the United States bringing dangerously low temperatures. Forecasters say temperatures in the north and central US could feel as low as -60C (-76C) with the effect of wind chill. Many schools and government buildings have been closed and residents in affected areas told to stay indoors
