The Real Cost Of Living In Cancun Mexico | Moving To Mexico

Cancún is located in southeast Mexico on the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. It is the biggest tourist destination in Mexico. The city lies on the Caribbean Sea and is one of Mexico's easternmost points. Population in 2023: 1,023,000 residents.

Cancun was created to foster tourism in the country. When development of the area started in 1970, the area had only 3 residents, all caretakers of the coconut plantation. Some 117 people lived in nearby Puerto Juárez, a fishing village.

Due to the investor reluctance to gamble on an unknown area, the Mexican government financed the first 9 hotels. In 1974 the city began as a tourism project. Since then, it has undergone a huge transformation from being a fisherman's village to being one of the two most well-known Mexican resort cities, along with Acapulco.

Apart from the L-shaped hotel zone, the residential part of the city is known as "El Centro". More Americans live in Mexico than any other foreign country. Thousands of expats have flocked to the Yucatan Peninsula. Cancun and nearby Playa del Carmen are very expat-friendly communities. The low cost of living makes Cancun a great home for remote workers or retirees.
