STORYLINE
A magnitude-6.4 earthquake shook southern Mexico on Tuesday, causing some panic, minor damage to buildings and prompting an oil refinery to shutdown as a precaution on the southern Pacific coast.
In Tehuantepec, a town in the southern state of Oaxaca, the quake caused large cracks in some buildings, including serious damage to two churches, and briefly cut power and telephone services.
Fabiola Mecot Rios, a resident of Tehuantepec, said: "We thought the end of the world was here because the quake was very strong. We never thought such a strong quake could catch us off guard like it did."
In other areas, there were no reports of major structural damage or injuries.
The quake gently swayed buildings in Mexico City and also rocked parts of Mexico's Gulf coast.
In the city of Oaxaca, the quake hit when students were in the middle of lessons.
Classes were then taken outside.
In Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of neighbouring Chiapas state, many people fled into the streets and then lingered outside their homes, fearing aftershocks.
Mexico's state-run oil company Petroleos Mexicanos shut down its Salina Cruz refinery on the southern coast as a precaution immediately after the 6:50 a.m. (1250 GMT) quake, two plant employees told Dow Jones Newswires.
The employees spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the news media.
One of the employees said no damage had been found yet and that the refinery should restart production soon.
A Pemex spokeswoman would not comment on the reported shutdown. The refinery has a capacity of 330-thousand barrels a day.
The US Geological Survey said the quake was centred 110 kilometres (70 miles) southwest of Tuxtla Gutierrez, near the border between Oaxaca and Chiapas states.
