(23 Sep 2014) RARE MANET AND TWO WARHOL PAINTINGS EXPECTED TO FETCH MILLIONS AT AUCTION
After remaining in a private collection's hands for more than 100 years, a rare painting by the impressionist Manet will be offered up on the auction block on Nov. 5.
The mid-1860s work portrays a young French actress Jeanne Demarsy in a floral dress holding parasol, surrounded by greenery.
Auction house Christie's estimates the work entitled "Le Printemps" or "Spring" to fetch around $25-$35 million dollars.
Christie's is also offering a pair of Warhol paintings on Nov. 12.
"Triple Elvis (Ferus Type)" and "Four Marlons" are among the pop artist's most famous portraits. Christie's says they have never appeared at auction before and could bring a combined total of $130 million.
The works were being sold separately but estimates for each were not yet available.
The Elvis shows the rock and roll heartthrob as a cowboy, armed and shooting from the hip. The Brandon silkscreen depicts the Hollywood actor perched on a motorcycle in a black leather jacket, an image that is repeated four times.
Both portraits are being sold by German casino company Westspiel, which acquired them in the late 1970s for its casino in Aachen, a German spa town in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Warhol produced a series of 22 images of Elvis. His "Double Elvis (Ferus Type)" sold for $37 million at Sotheby's in 2012.
The current record for the artist is $105.4 million for his "Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)," sold at Sotheby's last fall.
The most expensive work of art ever sold at auction is $142.4 million for a 1967 Francis Bacon triptych called "Three Studies of Lucian Freud."
