Tens of thousands of protesters clashed with police in the central German city of Giessen on Saturday as 50,000 demonstrators attempted to disrupt the founding meeting of the far-right Alternative for Germany’s (AfD) new nationwide youth organisation. Authorities deployed around 6,000 officers, helicopters, dog units and riot gear as protesters from trade unions, anti-far-right groups and civil society formed 16 blockades around the venue. Police reported several injuries on both sides after some demonstrators threw stones and tried to breach security barriers. The unrest caused major traffic disruption across the city, while roughly 1,000 AfD delegates continued with the meeting under heavy protection.
