Antiochus III, commonly known as Antiochus the Great, was a Hellenistic ruler who reigned as the sixth monarch of the Seleucid Empire from 223 to 187 BCE. He was born in 241 BCE, and his father was Seleucus II Callinicus. Antiochus the Great is best known for his ambitious military campaigns and attempts to restore the Seleucid Empire to its former prominence.

Upon ascending the throne, Antiochus faced a challenging political landscape, with the Seleucid Empire weakened by internal strife and external pressures. One of his primary goals was to expand and consolidate his empire's territory, mirroring the grand conquests of Alexander the Great. Antiochus engaged in military campaigns against various neighboring regions, including attempts to reclaim territories lost during the reign of his predecessors.

His campaigns included conflicts with the Ptolemaic Kingdom in Egypt, leading to the famous Battle of Raphia in 217 BCE, where he faced setbacks against Ptolemy IV. Antiochus also sought to assert control over regions such as Asia Minor, Armenia, Parthia, and Bactria. His military successes and challenges against powerful adversaries, including Rome, marked a significant chapter in the history of the Hellenistic world.

Despite notable victories, Antiochus the Great faced setbacks, especially in his interactions with the Roman Republic. The Treaty of Apamea in 188 BCE forced him to cede significant territories and marked the decline of the Seleucid Empire's influence. Antiochus died in 187 BCE while attempting to loot a temple in Elymaïs, Persia.

Antiochus the Great's legacy is one of a visionary and ambitious ruler who sought to revive the former glory of the Seleucid Empire, yet ultimately faced challenges that led to its decline. His reign is a complex chapter in the history of the Hellenistic period, marked by military exploits, strategic decisions, and interactions with other powerful entities of the time.
