Ideas for School Accommodations:

● Brain breaks
● Cool down area or “thinking” seat
● Non-verbal cues or code words to signal the need for a break or to address inappropriate behaviors
● Behavior contracts (possibly for all students)
● Check-in/Check-out on behavior and body regulation
● Reward positive behaviors (tangible may be necessary)
● Ensure students know the school-wide expectations
● Classroom expectations posted (visual and pictures)
● Focus on relationship building.
● Allow choices when possible and when it makes sense (can make certain choices more appealing than others)
● Assign “jobs” (to build self esteem or as a movement break)
● Mystery motivator (behavioral reinforcement system, never know when they get the reinforcer)
● Consistent application of rules

Sensory
● Incorporate sensory into lessons to create multisensory learning (glitter paper, grids, sandpaper, movement, etc.)
● Alternative/flexible seating( wiggle chair, exercise ball, stand)
● Attach stretchy exercise bands to chair legs or desk for students who need to bounce their feet
● Provide a weighted lap pad
● Provide earplugs or headphones for students who are sensitive to noise
● Build sensory breaks into the daily schedule
● Make sure the desk fits the student (feet touch the floor appropriately, etc)
● Allow student to complete heavy work (push, pull or carry items)
● Provide non-distracting fidgets if students have trouble listening to lessons or directions
