(9 Jul 2014) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks in Moscow on Wednesday with his Italian counterpart Federica Mogherini.
At a news conference later, Lavrov called for an end to the violence in Gaza and Israel.
"It is fundamentally important now, first of all, to stop the violence, to stop the shelling of Israel, and to stop the reciprocal strikes on Gaza in order to have a ceasefire," he told reporters.
Turning to the conflict in Ukraine, he said he hoped that peace talks involving Kiev and a contact group for the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe would see pro-Russia rebels treated as "participants of the process and not just as people from whom they demand capitulation".
Speaking about the South Stream pipeline project, Mogherini said it was important for the whole of Europe, but still "must adhere to EU regulations".
The pipeline is planned to transport Russian natural gas to Europe through the Black Sea and the Balkans.
The European Commission, the EU executive, has ordered a construction moratorium over concerns with Russia's dual role as pipeline owner and gas supplier.
