This message titled "THE GROWTH OF GODLY MEN TO GOSPEL MINISTERS" by Pastor (Dr) W.F. Kumuyi, delivered on Saturday, May 30, 2025, during the Disciples' Devotion at the Global Workers' Conference. The sermon focuses on the growth of godly men into gospel ministers within the early Christian church, drawing heavily from Acts 6:1-8,15. It highlights the problem of murmuring and how the apostles addressed this by appointing seven men to serve, allowing the apostles to prioritise prayer and the ministry of the word. The message explores the sinful nature and stern condemnation of murmuring, emphasising its detrimental effect on church growth. It further details the concentration on various ministries that help retain godliness, including apostle-prophet, evangelist-watchman, and pastor-teacher roles. Finally, the message underscores the consecration of ministers to invigorate the gospel, outlining several supporting ministries such as widow's sustenance, women's supportive, and music ministries, all contributing to the overall health and growth of the church.
The sermon is structured into three main points:
1. The Cankerworm of Murmuring That Reverses Growth.
Sinful Corruption
Murmuring is a sin that corrupts the church and does not indicate a converted life. It can lead to losing focus on the Lord and even destroying the fabric of a family or church.
Stern Condemnation
Both the Old and New Testaments condemn murmuring as a sin.
Sobering Conversion
Believers are exhorted to do all things without murmuring and disputing to be blameless and harmless, shining as lights in the world.
2. The Concentration on Ministry That Retains Godliness.
If murmuring festers, the church loses its distinctiveness.
Constructive Apostle-Prophet Ministry
This refers to the foundational ministry focused on building up the church and perfecting the saints.
Converting Evangelist-Watchman Ministry
Evangelists are crucial for bringing people to conversion and integrating them into the church. Other church activities should not distract from this pivotal work.
Conserving Pastor-Teacher Ministry
This ministry is vital for teaching the entire body of doctrines from the Word of God to conserve sound teaching within the church.
3. The Consecration of Ministers to Reinvigorate the Gospel
The choosing of seven men for service (Acts 6:5) freed the apostles to focus on prayer and the ministry of the word, leading to reinvigoration and growth in the church.
Seven Invigorating Ministries
The sermon outlines various supporting ministries:
Widows' sustenance ministry. The church has a responsibility to care for widows.
Women's supportive ministry. Specific ministry for aged women to teach younger women holiness, discretion, and obedience.
Winsome soul-stirring ministry. This is the music ministry, which should calm, refresh, and open hearts to God's word, not just entertain.
Watchful stabilising ministry. The ministry of Ushers, who ensure order and stop distractions in the church.
Workmen's strategic ministry. Technicians and labourers who maintain the physical ambiance of the local church.
Watering strengthening ministry. Follow-up ministries like House fellowship leaders and prayer warriors, who support the main teaching without contradicting it.
Wakening saving, sanctifying ministry. Ministry to young people, helping them overcome the wicked one and live sanctified lives free from the works of the flesh and youthful lusts.
The sermon concludes with a "Call to a Decision," inviting unbelievers to accept Jesus Christ and providing a prayer for salvation. It also encourages new believers to connect with the ministry for continued spiritual growth.
