Описание к видео The Bubak Legend: Harvest Fields, Lost Souls, and Terror

In the windswept fields and dark riverbanks of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, there exists a legend that chills the blood of even the most skeptical—the Bubak, a scarecrow-like creature cloaked in rags, stitched from shadow and sorrow.

Though often mistaken for an ordinary scarecrow standing silently in the distance, the Bubak is anything but lifeless.

According to legend, the Bubak weaves cloth from the souls of the dead in the moonlight. It hides in cornfields, behind haystacks, or along foggy riverbanks, waiting for travelers—especially children and the unwary—to stray too far from the safety of home.

The most terrifying part? The Bubak is known to mimic the cries of a baby.

In the dead of night, wanderers might hear faint, pitiful wails echoing from the darkness. Drawn by the sound, they search for the child—only to find nothing but silence... and a towering scarecrow with glowing eyes.

They are never seen again.

In some variations of the tale, the Bubak rides a shadowy cart pulled by black horses, or even black cats...collecting the souls of the dead. Like a rural grim reaper, it moves between villages, invisible to most, but said to be heard as a soft rumbling on still nights.

Its presence is often marked by a sudden chill, the rustling of dry grass, or birds falling silent.

Traditionally, the legend served as a warning to keep children indoors at night, away from the rivers, fields, and forests. But for many, belief in the Bubak isn’t just superstition—it’s real. Rural farmers still tell tales of glimpsing strange shapes in the corn at dusk. Some refuse to venture near certain parts of the countryside after dark.

The Bubak remains one of Central Europe’s darkest folkloric figures—a creature of grief, trickery, and night terrors. It reminds us that sometimes, the things meant to scare off crows... might be watching us instead.
