The thing abut genderbended love duets is that it turnes the gender roles upside down, and that, I think, makes the audience a little awkward.
The other thing is that love duets are usually written for a soprano and a tenor, and so, when you turn it around and use a different tune, it works fine for a tenor and an alto. And that's a neat trick when you're an alto with a tenor to sing love duetts with.
