On December 28, 1956, teenage sisters Barbara (15) and Patricia (12) Grimes left their home on the south side of Chicago, Illinois to go to the Brighton Theater and watch the Elvis Presley film Love Me Tender — something they had done many times before. They promised their mother they would be home before midnight, but they never returned.
Despite several reported sightings in Chicago in the days after their disappearance and one of the largest missing-persons searches in Cook County history, nobody could explain where the girls went. Even Elvis Presley publicly appealed for their safe return, but the appeal went unanswered.

Nearly one month later, on January 22, 1957, a local construction worker named Leonard Prescott noticed what he thought were mannequins on a rural road near German Church Road and County Line Road in Willow Springs, Illinois. As he approached with his wife, they realized it was not mannequins — it was the frozen, nude bodies of Barbara and Patricia Grimes.
Investigators believed the girls were driven out to the secluded road and left there. The coroner’s jury ultimately ruled the deaths a murder, although the exact cause, timeline, and perpetrator have never been conclusively determined. Over 160 officers searched the area, but no suspect was ever arrested and the case remains an unsolved cold case decades later.
