💡 Question:
Two test tubes with water are heated by a candle flame as shown in Fig. 7.16. Which thermometer (Fig. 7.16a or Fig. 7.16b) will record a higher temperature? Explain.
🔥 Answer:
In Fig. (a), the candle flame directly heats the bottom of the test tube. The water at the bottom becomes hot first and rises upward due to convection currents, transferring heat to the top where the thermometer is placed. Hence, the thermometer in Fig. (a) records a higher temperature faster.
In Fig. (b), the side of the test tube is heated instead of the bottom, so the heat transfer is slower and less effective.

This experiment beautifully demonstrates heat transfer by convection in liquids — an important concept in understanding how heat moves naturally in water and air.
